Living out my forensic anthropology DREAM with Temperance Brennan
Recently in a job interview I got asked: If I had a magic wand what my dream job would look like?
I said it was a good question, but that I wasn’t sure (this is not true really now that I think of it). I proceeded to describe my ideal working situation, good company with great people, and a culture that cares about humans as humans.
But really it was always forensic anthropologist. If I had a magic wand, I would be identifying and learning from skeletal remains. My interests have always ultimately surrounded forensics, and after attending massage school, I fell in love with bones. Reading the Temperance Brennan series is allowing me to live out that dream.
I watched Bones, the TV show with my mom in high school… and then I watched it again… and again… and again (and again and again and again). While the books (so far) are minimally comparable to the TV show and the cast chosen for the show, I’m also obsessed with the books.
In the books Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist who resides in North Carolina and Quebec, she is a recovering alcoholic and divorcee with a teenage daughter and a cat. None of the other characters from the show are in the books and the story lines don’t really match up… so besides Temperance being a forensic anthropologist, I don’t think there are any other comparisons. You do get a much more in depth look at each of the cases though, which as someone interested in the science of forensics, I found incredible interesting. If you’re looking for your Bones book fix, I don’t necessarily think this is it though. This is a completely different experience that embodies the day to day activities of Dr. Temperance Brennan.
Most similarities reside in Dr. Temperance Brennan herself. While she isn’t as socially awkward in the book, she still has a tendency to put herself in risky situations to help people closest to her. Her bad decisions and occasional lack of self awareness makes her incredibly relatable, but also make me go “what the actual fuck Brennan”.
If you’re interested in forensic casework in a very detailed fashion, this may be the series for you. I’ll keep you posted on how the series progresses and whether any further similarities can be distinguished between the book series and TV series.
Will Brennan and Ryan turn into Bones and Booth? Will Birdie survive the series? Only time will tell.
Au Revoir Readers,
Jess
